Depression: Determining Physical Symptoms

A lot of us or rather most of us can determine the emotional symptoms of depression. But you may not have the ides that depression can cause physical symptoms, too.
As a matter of fact, most of the people with depression feel pain or physical symptoms. And these are the following:

Headaches. These conditions are just fairly common in people with depression. And if you had migraines, it may worse if you are depressed.

Back pain. If you are suffering with back pain already, it may get worse if you feel depressed.
Muscle aches and joint pain. Depression can lead to any kind of chronic pain worse.

Chest pain. Obviously, it's very important to get chest pain checked out by an expert right away. It can be a sign of serious heart problems. But chest pain is also associated with depression.
Digestive problems. You might feel a circling stomach or diarrhea if you feel depress.

Exhaustion and fatigue. Your sleep would be useless; you may still feel tired or worn-out. And getting out of bed may seem very hard or even impossible.

Sleeping problems. A lot of the depressed people can not acquire sleep well anymore. They would wake up very early or can not fall asleep when they go to bed and while others sleep much more than the normal.

Change in appetite or weight. Most of the depressed people lose their appetite and by which their weight also were affected.

Dizziness or lightheadedness. Having no knowledge about the physical symptoms that might be caused by depression, many people with depression never get help. And even a lot of doctors miss the symptoms, too.
These symptoms are not really “all present in your head.” This depression situation can really cause some changes in your body. For sample, it can delayed down your digestion by which can result in stomach problems.

Depression seems to be associated to an unbalance of certain chemicals in your brain. And some of these same chemicals play a necessary role in how you feel pain. Well then, many experts conclude that depression can make you feel pain differently than from the others.

Your Eyes.... the windows to your organs?

Sight is one of the four senses, it’s a part of our body responsible for catching light and translating it into nerve impulses. This provides vision and considered as the most precious sense. How amazing God to create this small yet powerful sense of sight.

According to statistics, more than 13 million people suffered from a problem in the eyes and mostly ages 80 suffered from cataracts, a clouding that develops in the crystalline lens of the eye or in its envelope.

Well, one of those 13 million is me. Running down in the blood of my family is the problem in the eyes. I myself have a problem with my eyes, I can’t stare extensively to a thing for I suffer from headache, farsightedness, another problem I suffer, cant read what my professor writes on the board if I sit at the back, I have this mannerism of continuous blinking and i often have watery eyes, like i look like i am crying all the time, specially when I am in cold and hot places. These are some problems I suffer because of my eyes.

Anyway, suffering from this problem, I soon realized that I wasn’t exercising stewardship on this gift God give to me. It is because of carelessness and disregarding, was this result. But hey, there’s always a chance to make up for everything.

I learned from this also that I have to eat important foods which help my eyes. A research project conducted by the National Eye Institute shows that there are several nutrients that help protect the eyes. Some of which are those foods rich in Antioxidants, Beta Carotene, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Lutein and Zeaxanthin, plus zinc and omega-3 fats. These are some of the nutrients we have to intake for a proper caring of the eyes, and yes of course our very dearly friends Mr. Fruits and Mrs. Vegetables contains those nutrients we need, so again we should acknowledge them in our lives.

Healthy foods such as Sweet Potatoes which contains beta carotene, Spinach, an eye protector, it has all in one package, contains Vitamin C, Lutein and Zeaxanthin and an Oxidants, of course we should not forget our very popular Mr. Bunny’s favorite the Carrots which are loaded of beta carotene and antioxidants, are some of the fruits helping the eyes. Well not only in vegetables we could get these nutrients also in Ostrich a healthy and delicious lean substitute for any red or white meat (including beef, chicken, turkey, pork, or lamb), the Turkey which is rich in Zinc plus the B-vitamin niacin, which specifically protects against cataracts and many more.

But never forget, Discipline played an important role in all of this, if the person was not willing then this would not be all possible. Having a proper sleep helps also our eyes, it isn’t a robot anyway it has to rest also. Refraining from washing the face after an hour of facing a computer or heavy work which involves the eyes was one of the basic yet important that we could do to help our eyes.

These are some important reminders that we should all know. Having these gifts as part of our body we have the obligation to take care of them, we are accountable to this. Good steward it is.

The world is very beautiful, and it will be if we have our eyes, so blessed are we and be thankful for we could see this creation of God. How are your eyes? Is it healthy?

Stealth Health Approach

Tired of attempting so many health tips? Why not try the “Stealth Health Approach”?
David Katz, MD, MPH, director of Yale University's Prevention Research Center and of the Yale Preventive Medicine Center and the co-author of the book Stealth Health: How to Sneak Age-Defying, Disease-Fighting Habits into Your Life without Really Trying, suggests having any three of the following 12 changes and embodying them into your life for about four days. Meanwhile, having complacent with those changes, add another three. Within just a couple of weeks, you should start to feel some difference in yourself once you have incorporated all those changes, he says.

To Improve Nutrition:

1) Give thumbs down on foods and drinks with corn syrup, calorie-dense, nutritionally cheap sweetener which many believe was worse for the body than sugar, says Katz.
2) Bargain for whole foods ---- whether frozen, canned, or fresh from the farm ---- and whenever possible use them in replace of processed foods.
3) In order for you to reduce your appetite for more caloric foods and will automatically add veggies to your meal; begin each of your dinner with a mixed green salad.

To Improve Physical Fitness:

1) When picking something up, instead of bending over the usual way which stresses the lower back, bend your knees and do a squat. And this forces you to use your leg muscles and shall build strength.
2) Whenever you stop or rather the bus at a traffic light, tighten both your thighs and butt muscles. This will improve blood flow and will firm your leg and buttock muscles – and keep you mildly amaze!
3) Lift one foot a half – inch off the ground when you are standing on a line and switch every few minutes. The excess stress on your opposite foot, ankle, calf and thigh, plus your buttocks, will help your tone muscles firm.

To Improve Stress Control:

1) Share a hug to your partner every day before work. Study shows that this simple act will help you remain at peace when chaos ensues during your day.
2) Acquire a good cry. It will inspire your immune system, reduce levels of stress hormones, discharge depression, and help you think accurately.
3) For just twice a day, breathe deeply for three to five minutes.

To Improve Sleep:

1) With your just-washed sheets and pillowcases, sprinkle it with lavender water. It has been shown in studies that the scent promotes relaxation, which can lead to good sleep.
2) Purchase a new pillow or try a “cool” one – one with either all-natural fibers or a combination of sodium sulfate and ceramic fibers which help your head cool. Katz says that studies show that a pillow with an indent in the center can enhance sleep quality and reduce neck pain.
3) Before going to bed, eat a handful of walnuts. This will give you a boost of fiber and essential fatty acids with the amino acid tryptophan – a natural sleep-inducer.

Pandemic is declared

Pandemic is declared. Just this June 11, 2009, the World Health Organization declared the Pandemic alert to Phase 6 in response to the global spreading of the virus Influenza A (H1N1). More than 70 countries are reporting cases of human infection to the said virus and this numbers have been increasing for the past weeks.

A (H1N1) or sometimes called as “Swine Flu” is the new influenza virus striking the country causing sickness to people. A new virus from that of combined four viruses, from birds, man and to swine. It was originally referred to as “swine flu” because according to laboratory testing such virus is mostly found in the North American pigs, but on further study there were also difference on that virus circulating on those pigs. Its origin is still a mystery but the bottom line is it killed many people already. First cases reported were on that in Mexico, about 108 people authorities indicated as of this June 9, 2009 were confirmed deaths due to this virus. It has no vaccines for prevention but there were medicines recommended for its treatment. It is contagious, it could infect people if have contact to the contaminated individual. It was alarming; no wonder the World Health Organization raised it to higher level alert.

Influenza A (H1N1) same as an ordinary influenza have symptoms that could be identified by individual. Some of its symptoms are: Fever, Cough, Colds, Headache, Flu, Muscle pain, and feeling of weary and exhausted. Other patients suffered from vomits and diarrhea.
But how does this virus Influenza A (H1N1) infect other people?

A person could be contaminated by such virus through exposure to a contaminated person coughing or sneezing. Commonly people don’t have this proper etiquette when in public places; they just cough even if you’re in their face. It’s as if you didn’t exist, ignoring you. Scouring of eyes and nose also after touching contaminated objects could also be the cause of infection. This was common to a child, that’s why proper washing of hands is strictly practiced and taught by the Department of Health. But a reminder to everyone, Influenza A (H1N1) virus could not be acquire from swine or any cooked pigs for food.

So, how to prevent this virus?

To keep oneself from this virus, some basic yet important personal hygiene should be practiced.

Wash hands before and after eating. The basic command our parents taught, but not just when eating every minute we should have the obligation to keep our hands clean.
Have a prepared handkerchief when going to places especially public ones. Cover your face with this. Refrain from having physical contact to people you know has a sickness such as cough or colds, and if have contact with them; make sure to wash your hands after. We never know, he/she might be contaminated.

Use if possible, disinfectants such as alcohol which could help you protect from any germs. Prevention is better than cure.

Make sure to boost your body resistance, make it healthy and strong to fight any sickness. Acknowledging Mrs. Vegetables and Mr. Fruits in ones life. Of course eating these healthy foods. Through these, you could have a strong immune system to fight any sickness attempting to enter your body as well as this virus Influenza A (H1N1).
Proper sleep could also help you regain strength from the exhausted day. 8 hours of sleep is required for everybody.

Avoid too much stress. Too much worrying could make your body weak. Worrying doesn’t do well to your body rather make it worst.

Regular exercise is very well recommended. This helps your body in everyday works.

These are some of the preventions a person should remember in order to avoid this novel spreading virus Influenza A (H1N1). This month is a FLU Awareness Month so stay healthy.

Reading Food Labels

Food labels encompass the whole information that can help everyone make smarter food choices. You will be able to choose foods that provide you with enough nutrients like fiber, calcium, and protein and also you will be able to avoid foods that are high in fats, calories, and sodium through reading the information on the back of the packaged you buy. Learning on how to break the information on a food label can help you abstain problems with allergies and can also help you lose or control your weight.

The food label is divided into several components. And these elements provide facts on the levels of nutrients, serving size, ingredient listing, and other factors in the food product.

Serving size

The serving size is the label which tells you how large a serving of the food product has, how many servings are contained in the package, and the calorie amount per serving. By using this information and following it will help you keep your food serving under control.

Total fat

The total fat of the food product is expressed in grams and it gives the percent daily value (DV) on the food label. And is broken immediately into the types of fats the product has.

• Saturated fat – “bad fats”, such as animal fats
• Trans fat – “bad fats”, from hydrogenated oil
• Unsaturated fat – “good fat”, from vegetable oils

Carbohydrates

The percentage of carbohydrates, listed on the label in grams and percent, which you eat, is an important part of your diet. It should come from whole grains breads, wheat pastas, and brown rice, rather then sugary or starchy foods.

Dietary fiber

Fiber is found in fruits, vegetables and whole grains. It is listed in grams and percent DV on the food label. A diet high in fiber is important in preventing digestive problems.

Cholesterol

The measure of cholesterol of the food product is listed in mg, same as the percent DV. The lower the number is, the better.

Sodium

The sodium amount is also stated in mg and percent DV. Look for foods with less than 140 mg of sodium, or that are labeled “low in sodium”.

Protein

The protein amount is listed in grams and percent DV. Protein is most found in meat, eggs, dairy products, nuts, and beans.

Vitamins and minerals

The vitamins and minerals are both listed on the label along with the name and by percent DV. This include calcium, vit c, iron, vit a, and others.

Ingredients

On the bottom part of the food label are the in order listed ingredients of the food product. It is essential if you or a family member has a food allergy, and for finding hidden ingredients which are high in sugar or trans fats.

Food labels are usually on the package for us to use. Taking effort in reading food labels will give you the truth to make a better choices concerning lower calorie foods, foods that have higher concentrations of the nutrients by which our bodies need, and lower amount of the things we don’t really need, such as cholesterol, saturated fats, and sugar.

Sit all day and suffer a stroke!

Did you know that when you are sitting, there is an important enzyme that is shutting down?

This enzyme is called LIPASE, which is responsible for the processing of the fats in your body. Once this shuts down, the processing apparently stops too. Veins will be blocked, causing heart diseases. This is one of the reasons why office workers, who sit in front of the computer the whole day, have weak heart. And yes, all "tamad" people are prone to suffer a stroke too. So if you want to have a heart failure, just sit all day!

From wiki: A lipase is a water-soluble enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of ester bonds in water–insoluble, lipid substrates. Lipases thus comprise a subclass of the esterases. Lipases perform essential roles in the digestion, transport and processing of dietary lipids such as triglycerides, fats, oils in most, if not all, living organisms. Genes encoding lipases are even present in certain viruses.

No Pain, No Gain!

Not everyone of course is certain that small steps could lead you all the way to good health. According to Marc Siegel, MD of a clinical associate professor at the NYU School of Medicine, while doing something is certainly better than doing nothing, making such small changes is like using a Band – aid to stop a hemorrhage.

“It is a small, gimmicky idea to target people with very unhealthy lifestyles, and for some it may be useful,” says Siegel, author of False Alarm: the Truth about the Epidemic of Fear. But he’s afraid that for most people, it’s sending the wrong message.

“In some way it is a resignation, an admission that things can not be changed – and that is certainly not the long – term answer,” Siegel tells WebMD.

Katz admits that the Stealth Health approach may not be right for everybody.

“There is a trade – off because if you try to make the pursuit of health easier for people, you run the risk of leading them to believe they don’t need to do very much --- and that would be the wrong message,” he says.

Meantime, Katz believes that for those who find out making changes a horrifying move, Stealth Health can make a change.

“If you want the really big gains, there has to be some pain,” says Katz. “But there is a lot to be said before the idea that you can make some gains with little or no pain, and that is infinitely better than no gains.”
