What is Your Eating Habit?

What is your habit? Eating is loved by everyone (almost). A very yummy habit it is. One eats when he is happy and eats again whenever depressed. People eat every minute of their life, as if their stomach couldn’t be really contented.

How should one eat food? Would you prefer chewing it thoroughly or swallowing it immediately? Although chewing needs no explanation, a shocking number of people do not adequately chew foods they eat. People especially business minded one almost doesn’t have much time even for eating. Many times they eat easily chewed one and instant foods. Mostly because of rush they just swallow it without chewing thoroughly. Is it healthy to practice?

As we are eating lunch, together with my brothers and sister in faith this afternoon, a bro opened a topic about the healthy and proper eating etiquettes. According to him, one should chew food 15 times or more so the food would be grind and also so that the stomach could properly digest it. It prevents indigestion, gas and heartburn. It was also a good exercise for the gums which could prevent gum problems. I heard also that drinking should only be done after eating which is very opposite to the practice we have in the family, but I believe it’s not always counted as a good suggestion.

In eating we should always remember that it is very important to chew the foods we put into our mouth. We should also take into consider those foods that we input rather than just swallowing it. If we input junks in our body then it will manifest in us as well as inputting healthy foods. It is said that we are what we eat, so we should be aware of what we are eating. Life doesn’t just end in eating, healthy lifestyle starts in the foods we eat.

happy chewing!

STOP MALNUTRITION

Having a hard time gaining weight? Tired of being teased as a “walking bamboo” by your classmates and, or malnourished said by friends? Well, I could relate to that. Same here people doesn’t get tired of teasing me, if not called malnourish because of my body figure, all the time I was mistaken as a 14 years old…ouch that hurts.

Well an irony of life, many people wants to lose weight, but here I am wants to gain some. People could not be contented really. Anyways, malnourishment is really popular to Philippines. Almost in many studies we hit the top. Funny yet alarming. To think, we are not yet that civilized and so we are still rich in these foods good for the body. A country blessed in its nature, a plants and trees which are lavishing of fruits and vegetables. But why is this happening to our country? Why does malnutrition being suffered by Filipinos specially children.

One bad culture of Filipinos is that of selfishness. They think only for themselves and their own satisfaction, leaving behind their obligations to other people specially their children. Instead of providing foods for the family they spend it rather to their vices. Poor children suffered, they could not get the right nutrition they should have. And instead of eating fruits and vegetables, they consume junks in their body which soon causes malnutrition. This also was the cause of them being prone to sickness for the junks weaken our immune system.

These are some of those many alarming problems our country faces. A lesson that each Filipinos should learned. Think also for the benefit of others, enough of selfishness. Giving children the proper nutrition they should have would lessen this malnutrition.

As for me now, I’m starting to learn to eat vegetables, my stomach can’t take it but hey it’s what my body needs. “Starting a new life” I joke on them. Well at least now they couldn’t tease me anymore.

Fresh from the trees in the forest this I tell you, if you want to have a long and healthy life, start acknowledging Mr. Fruits and Mrs. Vegetables in your life.

Vitamins or sickness?

It’s back to school. As we are lining, together with other students on the registration area, my friend was whining about her cough, well it’s not really a cough, she could just feel an itch at her throat that makes her cough. Apparently, she was not feeling well. She’d been sick since the first day of class, and that was when we had coke for snack. Well, its actually our fault because we insisted her to share it with us, I feel very guilty of course. I didn’t know that her resistance wasn’t that strong.

Anyway, telling her story as we were waiting in line, I feel pity about her. She’d been suffering from different illnesses, and if I wasn’t mistaken it was ever since she was a child. Her immune system to fight illnesses wasn’t that strong. It became an obstruction mostly on school activities. She couldn’t focus that much on schooling because of this inconveniences she suffer every time it would attack. A burden it is. Hearing such story, enlighten me to really eat healthy foods [especially vegetables and fruits] to boost body resistance against illnesses. It’s very uncomfortable when one is sick, it hinders you to do the things you should be doing on that day, too many uncomfortable feelings that you would suffer and not to mention the money you would spend for the medication and worst hospital payments.

Seeing my friend suffer from that sickness, I thought that compare to the money I would possibly spend for the medications an apple a day which cost 20 pesos or a vegetables that cost just how many compare to that of hospital fees would cover all those expenses. See how irony it is? People don’t like those foods that are needed by there body but then whine a lot of the hospital fees.

Well, it was for us to think of everything. Vitamins or sickness?

Your Eyes.... the windows to your organs?

Sight is one of the four senses, it’s a part of our body responsible for catching light and translating it into nerve impulses. This provides vision and considered as the most precious sense. How amazing God to create this small yet powerful sense of sight.

According to statistics, more than 13 million people suffered from a problem in the eyes and mostly ages 80 suffered from cataracts, a clouding that develops in the crystalline lens of the eye or in its envelope.

Well, one of those 13 million is me. Running down in the blood of my family is the problem in the eyes. I myself have a problem with my eyes, I can’t stare extensively to a thing for I suffer from headache, farsightedness, another problem I suffer, cant read what my professor writes on the board if I sit at the back, I have this mannerism of continuous blinking and i often have watery eyes, like i look like i am crying all the time, specially when I am in cold and hot places. These are some problems I suffer because of my eyes.

Anyway, suffering from this problem, I soon realized that I wasn’t exercising stewardship on this gift God give to me. It is because of carelessness and disregarding, was this result. But hey, there’s always a chance to make up for everything.

I learned from this also that I have to eat important foods which help my eyes. A research project conducted by the National Eye Institute shows that there are several nutrients that help protect the eyes. Some of which are those foods rich in Antioxidants, Beta Carotene, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Lutein and Zeaxanthin, plus zinc and omega-3 fats. These are some of the nutrients we have to intake for a proper caring of the eyes, and yes of course our very dearly friends Mr. Fruits and Mrs. Vegetables contains those nutrients we need, so again we should acknowledge them in our lives.

Healthy foods such as Sweet Potatoes which contains beta carotene, Spinach, an eye protector, it has all in one package, contains Vitamin C, Lutein and Zeaxanthin and an Oxidants, of course we should not forget our very popular Mr. Bunny’s favorite the Carrots which are loaded of beta carotene and antioxidants, are some of the fruits helping the eyes. Well not only in vegetables we could get these nutrients also in Ostrich a healthy and delicious lean substitute for any red or white meat (including beef, chicken, turkey, pork, or lamb), the Turkey which is rich in Zinc plus the B-vitamin niacin, which specifically protects against cataracts and many more.

But never forget, Discipline played an important role in all of this, if the person was not willing then this would not be all possible. Having a proper sleep helps also our eyes, it isn’t a robot anyway it has to rest also. Refraining from washing the face after an hour of facing a computer or heavy work which involves the eyes was one of the basic yet important that we could do to help our eyes.

These are some important reminders that we should all know. Having these gifts as part of our body we have the obligation to take care of them, we are accountable to this. Good steward it is.

The world is very beautiful, and it will be if we have our eyes, so blessed are we and be thankful for we could see this creation of God. How are your eyes? Is it healthy?

Stealth Health Approach

Tired of attempting so many health tips? Why not try the “Stealth Health Approach”?
David Katz, MD, MPH, director of Yale University's Prevention Research Center and of the Yale Preventive Medicine Center and the co-author of the book Stealth Health: How to Sneak Age-Defying, Disease-Fighting Habits into Your Life without Really Trying, suggests having any three of the following 12 changes and embodying them into your life for about four days. Meanwhile, having complacent with those changes, add another three. Within just a couple of weeks, you should start to feel some difference in yourself once you have incorporated all those changes, he says.

To Improve Nutrition:

1) Give thumbs down on foods and drinks with corn syrup, calorie-dense, nutritionally cheap sweetener which many believe was worse for the body than sugar, says Katz.
2) Bargain for whole foods ---- whether frozen, canned, or fresh from the farm ---- and whenever possible use them in replace of processed foods.
3) In order for you to reduce your appetite for more caloric foods and will automatically add veggies to your meal; begin each of your dinner with a mixed green salad.

To Improve Physical Fitness:

1) When picking something up, instead of bending over the usual way which stresses the lower back, bend your knees and do a squat. And this forces you to use your leg muscles and shall build strength.
2) Whenever you stop or rather the bus at a traffic light, tighten both your thighs and butt muscles. This will improve blood flow and will firm your leg and buttock muscles – and keep you mildly amaze!
3) Lift one foot a half – inch off the ground when you are standing on a line and switch every few minutes. The excess stress on your opposite foot, ankle, calf and thigh, plus your buttocks, will help your tone muscles firm.

To Improve Stress Control:

1) Share a hug to your partner every day before work. Study shows that this simple act will help you remain at peace when chaos ensues during your day.
2) Acquire a good cry. It will inspire your immune system, reduce levels of stress hormones, discharge depression, and help you think accurately.
3) For just twice a day, breathe deeply for three to five minutes.

To Improve Sleep:

1) With your just-washed sheets and pillowcases, sprinkle it with lavender water. It has been shown in studies that the scent promotes relaxation, which can lead to good sleep.
2) Purchase a new pillow or try a “cool” one – one with either all-natural fibers or a combination of sodium sulfate and ceramic fibers which help your head cool. Katz says that studies show that a pillow with an indent in the center can enhance sleep quality and reduce neck pain.
3) Before going to bed, eat a handful of walnuts. This will give you a boost of fiber and essential fatty acids with the amino acid tryptophan – a natural sleep-inducer.
